Millennium Carillon: Naperville's Towering Musical Landmark

Nestled in the picturesque Riverwalk Park in Naperville, Illinois, the Millennium Carillon stands as a towering symbol of the city's rich history and its commitment to the arts. This impressive structure, completed in 2000, not only serves as a cherished landmark but also offers breathtaking panoramic views and enchanting musical performances that captivate visitors and residents alike.

Rising 160 feet above the ground, the Millennium Carillon is an awe-inspiring sight. Designed by Rolf Achilles and inspired by traditional European bell towers, the carillon features a blend of modern and classic architectural elements, including a glass-enclosed observation deck and a soaring spire that complements the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of the Millennium Carillon is its magnificent collection of 72 bells, cast by the renowned Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry in the Netherlands. The carillon's largest bell, known as the "Captain Joseph Naper Bell," weighs an astounding six tons, while the smallest bell tips the scales at a mere 10 pounds.

These finely tuned bells are played using a keyboard-like instrument called a carillon clavier, which is connected to the bells via a system of wires and levers. Skilled musicians, known as carillonneurs, perform captivating melodies on the carillon by striking the wooden batons and foot pedals with precise movements.

Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy a variety of concerts and special performances at the Millennium Carillon. Weekly recitals showcase the talents of local and international carillonneurs, filling the air with enchanting music that can be heard throughout the park.

In addition to regular recitals, the carillon hosts seasonal events and themed concerts, such as holiday sing-alongs, patriotic performances, and even concerts that coincide with Naperville's annual festivals.

For those looking to take in the stunning views of Naperville and beyond, the Millennium Carillon's Moser Tower features an observation deck accessible by both stairs and an elevator. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of downtown Naperville, the Riverwalk Park, and on a clear day, even the Chicago skyline.

The Millennium Carillon is located at 443 Aurora Ave, Naperville, IL 60540, within the beautiful Riverwalk Park. The carillon is open for tours and observation deck visits during the spring, summer, and fall months, with varying hours depending on the season. Admission prices range from $3-$4, with discounts available for seniors, children, and Naperville residents.
